Description
AMACO Potter’s Choice Glaze PC-24 SAPPHIRE FLOAT | Cone 5-6
PC-24 Sapphire Float COMBINATIONS
PC-24 Sapphire Float offers a luminous interpretation of deep blue glaze, inspired by gemstone saturation and layered mineral depth. Designed for cone 5–6 firing, this glaze is part of the Potter’s Choice series that emphasizes movement, variation, and interaction with surface texture.
When applied evenly, Sapphire Float produces a rich blue base with subtle shifts in tone across the surface. Thinner areas may reveal lighter sapphire hues, while thicker applications intensify into deeper, more saturated blues. This natural variation contributes to the glaze’s floating visual quality.
One of its most notable characteristics is how it responds to texture. On carved or sculpted surfaces, Sapphire Float breaks over edges, producing highlights that contrast with darker pooled areas. This interplay of light and depth enhances dimensional forms and makes it particularly effective for decorative pottery and statement functional ware.
Pooling behavior in recessed areas creates concentrated color zones that resemble layered glass or mineral deposits. These effects are not uniform, which adds to the organic character of the glaze. Each firing can produce slightly different results depending on thickness, clay body, and kiln atmosphere.
Sapphire Float is frequently used on stoneware pieces where artists want a bold yet natural blue presence. It is suitable for mugs, bowls, vases, and sculptural ceramics, especially those with carved or textured surfaces.
As always with AMACO Potter’s Choice glazes, testing is recommended before large production runs, particularly when layering or combining with other glazes in the series.
