Description
PC-27 – Tourmaline – Mid Range Potters Choice Glaze in Pint Size Container
PC-27 Tourmaline COMBINATIONS
Tourmaline is a striking glaze that blends deep green and blue undertones into a naturally variegated surface reminiscent of polished mineral stone. Designed for cone 5–6 firing, it belongs to the AMACO Potter’s Choice line, where glaze movement and interaction with texture are central to the final aesthetic.
On application, Tourmaline PC-27 tends to develop a rich base color that can lean more green or blue depending on thickness and clay body interaction. Thinner layers often appear lighter and more translucent, allowing subtle variations from the clay beneath to influence the surface. Heavier applications intensify saturation, producing deeper jewel-like tones.
One of its most desirable qualities is how it responds to texture. On carved or sculpted surfaces, Tourmaline naturally breaks over edges, revealing lighter highlights that contrast with darker, pooled areas. This creates a layered, dimensional effect that enhances both functional ware and sculptural pieces.
In recessed areas, the glaze pools and deepens, forming rich zones of color that resemble natural mineral deposits or weathered stone. These variations are not uniform, giving each piece a unique surface character after firing.
Tourmaline performs especially well on textured stoneware bodies, where its movement and breaking qualities can fully develop. It is commonly used for mugs, bowls, vases, and decorative ceramics where artists want a bold yet organic surface response.
Because glaze thickness significantly affects outcome, testing is recommended—especially when layering with other Potter’s Choice glazes or adjusting firing schedules.
Key Features:
- Cone 5–6 stoneware glaze
- Green-blue tourmaline-inspired variation
- Strong breaking over textured surfaces
- Rich pooling in carved areas
- Ideal for expressive functional ware
Tourmaline is an intense, opaque blue-green glaze that forms a smooth, strong surface. It goes well layered with other Potter’s Choice glazes.
This glaze comes with a safety warning. Due to variations in firing temperature and possible contamination, tableware producers must test all finished ware to establish dinnerware status.
