PC-30 Temmoku COMBINATIONS

PC-30 Temmoku is a traditional-inspired glaze that produces rich, dark brown to near-black surfaces with subtle depth and variation. Firing at cone 5–6, it reflects the classic aesthetics of iron-rich high-temperature ceramics while remaining accessible in electric or gas kiln environments.

In thinner applications, Temmoku reveals warm brown undertones that can show hints of transparency, allowing clay body influence to subtly appear. In heavier applications, it develops a deep, glossy near-black surface with strong visual weight.

One of its most valued characteristics is its depth of tone. Rather than appearing flat, Temmoku often reveals subtle shifts in brown, black, and occasionally reddish undertones depending on thickness and firing conditions. This creates a layered surface that feels rich and grounded.

On textured surfaces, the glaze breaks lightly over edges, exposing warmer brown highlights that contrast with darker pooled areas. This effect enhances carved or thrown detail and adds dimensional character to functional ware.

In recessed areas, Temmoku pools into darker concentrations, often appearing almost black with a glossy finish. These variations are especially effective on forms with strong contours or intentional surface carving.

Temmoku is widely used for functional stoneware, including mugs, teapots, bowls, and serving pieces, due to its durability in appearance and timeless aesthetic. It is also frequently used as a base glaze for layering experiments.

As with all Potter’s Choice glazes, test firing is recommended to understand how clay body and thickness influence final results.
